COUNCIL bosses are urging people to recycle more rubbish after ditching free bin bags.

Tendring Council decided to ditch bin bag deliveries to save more than £150,000 a year in a bid to balance the books.

Households will now have to buy their own bin bags.

Council environment boss Mick Talbot says people can reduce the number of refuse sacks they need by recycling more.

Mr Talbot said: “Recent black sack sampling revealed that food waste accounts for about 30 per cent of the contents of the average black bag – and it does not need to be in there.

“Plastic bottles and cans that could be recycled also regularly turn up in black refuse sacks."

The council’s recycling team can be contacted on 01255 686888.
