A CROSSING that was the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash could be set for a revamp to make it safer.

A scheme has been launched to look at replacing a zebra crossing in Frinton Road, Kirby Cross, with a pelican crossing controlled by traffic lights.

The current crossing, between the One Stop shop and Bemerton Gardens, was the scene of a hit-and-run crash on Boxing Day last year.

Barbara Cyfrowicz, 54, suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a car as she was crossing to the shop. She died in hospital the following day.

The crash sparked calls for urgent safety improvements.

Tendring’s highways panel has now agreed to pay £5,000 for a study to decide whether traffic lights should be put in at the crossing.

Kirby Residents’ Association chairman Ray Enever said: “It needs more than a study. They need to follow through and do this now.

“They have discussed moving it, but people would still cross there because of the school, shop and housing estate being right there.

“It’s dangerous and the only way to make it safer for pedestrians is to control it with traffic lights. We need this and we have already seen it could make the difference between life and death.”

The results of the study will help the highways panel decide whether to push the pelican crossing forward.
