DELIGHTED residents and councillors have hailed the potential arrival of Aldi as a major boost for Walton.

The budget supermarket confirmed plans to build a store at the recently-closed Martello Caravan Park site.

It is hoped the develeopment will help revitalise the town.

Tendring Council leader Mick Page said: “Aldi will obviously need to go through the planning process and a formal application is expected in the next month or so.

“They have said they will consult with residents about their scheme and I am delighted that they are going to take people’s views into account.

“If the project gets the go-ahead, it will help with the regeneration of the town and is very much welcomed following the recent decision by Tesco.”

The district council is also working with Tesco to find an alternative developer for that plot of land.

Mr Page said he wanted to see the plot taken up by another retail outlet if possible.

Martello Land and Properties boss Stephen Sibley is managing the development of the Martello site.

He said: “Aldi’s confirmation that it is coming to Walton is excellent.

“Aldi is one of the UK’s fastest-growing retailers and the fact such a prestigious company is committed to this site sends a clear message that Walton is open for business.”
