CLACTON MP Douglas Carswell has accused the Prime Minister of “discovering he is a Eurosceptic” – four months before the General Election.

The UKIP MP blasted David Cameron after he hinted he would be prepared to stage an early referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union if the Conservatives regain power in May.

Mr Cameron told BBC1’s Andrew Marr he would be “delighted” if he could wrap up his promised renegotiation of Britain’s membership terms, in time to put them to the country before the current target date of 2017.

His comments came as UKIP leader Nigel Farage indicated he could be prepared to prop up a minority Conservative government to achieve his longheld objective of an in/out referendum.

But Mr Carswell said it was too little, too late for an early referendum to be staged.

He added: “Mr Cameron has consistently broken every promise he has ever made on the EU. He is now desperate for votes.

“He has been Prime Minister for four years and only now, in the months before an election, discovers he is a Eurosceptic.”
