SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has confirmed plans to open a new store in Walton.

The store is set to be built on the now-closed Martello Caravan Park site, next to the area set aside for a Tesco store.

Tesco axed its superstore masterplan last week – Aldi says it has no plans to develop the proposed Tesco site.

Bosses say the Aldi store will be a multi-million pound development, featuring a 1,254 square ft store and a 102 space car park.

It should create 40-50 jobs.

Aldi property director Adam Ward said: “ “We have been keen to open a neighbourhood store in Walton for some time and are delighted to confirm our plans for an award-winning ALDI.

“We are aware of recent announcements regarding Tesco on the neighbouring site, although this has absolutely no bearing on us.

“Our neighbourhood store is an entirely different offer and it has always been our intention to invest in Walton, regardless of whether or not there is another foodstore on the neighbouring site.”
