A SUMMER theatre has been given a huge publicity boost after hitting the airwaves on Radio 4.

One Foot in the Grave star Richard Wilson helped Frinton Summer Theatre celebrate its 75th anniversary earlier this year by starring in The Dog.

He spent a fortnight in the resort learning his lines before performing Jon Canter’s new play The Dog, whichmade its premiere at the McGrigor Hall.

The actor kept a radio diary of the experience, from the first day of rehearsals through to the last night of the show.

Frinton Forever was broadcast on Monday, followed by a radio version of The Dog.

On air, Wilson admitted having to share the stage with co-star Darcey the dog was nerve-racking.

“Because you don’t know what she’s going to do, you are in a state of panic all the time!” he told radio listeners.

The comedy legend seemed to enjoy his stay in Frinton, including lemon drizzle cakes and the resort’s fish and chips.

He said the beach hut where he learnt his lines was a “triumph” but admitted he didn't have the “gumption” to go in the sea.

Friends of Frinton Theatre chairman Anthea Dancey said the radio exposure was a huge boost.

“It’s all good publicity for us and we are very pleased to have him as our patron,” she said.
