A DEFECIT of £2.4million was recorded by the Colchester hospital trust in 2013/14.
The trust, which had a turnover of £266.7million, had recorded a £9.1million surplus the previous year.
Pay costs were responsible for £13.6million of the expenditure increase last year.
A trust spokesman said: “This increase was partly planned investment in nursing staff but was also impacted by an increased reliance on temporary staff which made up 12.7 per cent of the total pay bill."
