Braintree district: Schools look forward to Olympic torch arriving Braintree district: Schools look forward to Olympic torch arriving

A series of inspirational community sporting figures have been given the honour of running with the Olympic torch this week.

The torch will come to the district on Friday when it is carried through the streets of Hatfield Peverel.

But there are also a number of Braintree and Witham residents who are carrying the flame on other legs of the torch relay.

The flame makes its only stop in our district on Friday morning when it passes through Hatfield Peverel, with three torchbearers sharing duties along the route.

The torch starts in Gleneagles Way at 8.44am and continues along Maldon Road, ending at the junction with Ulting Road at 8.53am.

Pupils from the village’s two schools are enjoying a week of Olympic-themed celebrations ahead of their chance to see the flame on Friday morning.

Chris James, headteacher of St Andrew’s Junior School, said: "We are looking forward to it massively since not every school is lucky enough to have the torch on their doorstep."
