Braintree: Vet warns of hen snatcher

Braintree: Vet warns of hen snatcher Braintree: Vet warns of hen snatcher

More than 45 hens have been stolen from a smallholding.

It is the third time Hens for Homes in Stebbing has been targeted since 2010, despite vet Kirsty Watts stepping up security.

Miss Watts, 36, said: “The police are at a loss what to do.

“It is very difficult to distinguish one hen from another to prove ownership and there is a ready market for backyard hens since Jamie Oliver (and others) started encouraging people to keep chickens.”

She said eggs sales for the year would be hit by the theft, and she has also lost about £1,000 on the chickens were due to be sold.

I have some pretty smart covert CCTV equipment which may help to resolve this issue. Contact me on fixitman@btinternet.

Sorry to hear this.
Our hens came from Kirsty originally, and we've also boarded them with her before now.

Not to be too blunt about this but I just bought three hens for a tenner (two Orpingtons and a Plymouth Ribbed, incase you're interested!) And I certainly wouldn't be interested in spending fifty quid or more for a CCTV system! Crikey - you can pick up a PC webcam for a couple quid and hook that up with some easy to get motion sensor software and Robert's yer farther's bruvva: done and dusted. But... Will that STOP the thefts or simply record them? LOL Maybe simply put up a few official looking signs implying you've got an active CCTV security system and it'll deter the buggers!

Still - the question I ask myself is who would steal someone's chickens, for heaven's sakes? Are things really that bad?
