Braintree: Firefighters save heart patient

Coggeshall firemen Coggeshall firemen

Firefighters helped save a man’s life after being called not to tackle a fire, but a medical emergency.

Six retained firemen from Coggeshall have recently been trained as first responders to give on the spot emergency first aid before paramedics arrive.

They were called out 15 times in January, and in one case their help potentially stopped a desperately sick man from suffering a heart attack.

They are trained in giving oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and using a defibrillator.

Great idea perhaps more firefighters could be trained as first responders, having waited 40 minutes for a ambulance to arrive then having 2 turn up together i can see the benifits of firefighting first responders.
Obviously i would not want them called off firefighting duties but surely it makes sense to use up their downtime constructively.

Where I live that is the norm. First responders (EMT) do the necessary to address the issues at hand and then either transport to the ER or call in the chopper. Works very well and very fast response with terrific abilities displayed by the entire team(s).
