A war hero's medals have been donated to the Imperial War Museum.

Wing Commander Douglas Blackwood fought in the Battle of Britain and flew with disabled pilot Douglas Bader.

His seven medals, which included a George Star with Battle of Britain bar and the Czech War Cross, were presented to the museum's aviation branch in Duxford as it prepares to commemorate the pilots who repelled the Luftwaffe in 1940.

Son Michael Blackwood, of Blackmore End, said: "My father never talked about what he wanted to happen to his medals, but I think this is the right place.

"I think he would be tickled pink by the idea."

His father, who died in 1997 at the age of 87, was based at Duxford during the Battle of Britain and commanded the RAF's first Czech fighter squadron.
