A historic grade II listed water and steam mill with nearly five acres of land has been placed on the market for £1.4 million.

Bulford Mill, in Bulford Mill Lane, Cressing, dates from the 19th century, and was producing flour until 1947.

Situated on the banks of the River Brain, the property consists of six bedrooms and comes with marsh and woodland areas amongst the grounds.

Historian Mike Bardell said: "There was a mill on this site over 1000 years ago and a mill is mentioned in Domesday Book.

"Braintree had piped water supply by 1862 but no adequate means of sewage disposal.

"Raw sewage often escaped into the River Brain causing the owner of Bulford Mill to complain endlessly to Braintree Board of Health until a proper sewage works was opened at Goldinghams Farm in 1911 - it is still there today and works effectively."

Prominent barrister and county court judge John Llewellyn bought the property in 1947, before eventually passing it to his children in 1990. It left the family's ownership in 1992.

The mill benefits from fishing rights, a cellar, a coach style outhouse and is set over five floors.
