A school has been told its safeguarding is effective after schools inspector Ofsted expressed concerns.

Maltings Academy, in Witham, came under scrutiny after safeguarding issues were raised.

But, following an inspection, Ofsted has now said the school is safeguarding its pupils effectively after investigating the concerns.

The inspection report said: “Over the past year, concerns were raised with Ofsted regarding the school’s procedures for safeguarding pupils.

“One complaint highlighted the incident was not reported immediately to the police.

“Leaders investigated, found this to be the case, and took appropriate action to tighten up procedures.

“The number of fixed-term exclusions for pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities is much higher than other pupils.

“Inspectors noted an incorrect use of attendance codes when checking the records of pupils who have been excluded.”

It went on to say leaders acknowledged that, in the past, school practice had breached statutory guidance.

The school’s records also showed not all complaints made by parents follow the complaints procedure.

But the schools inspector has gone on to say it is happy with safeguarding procedures after the academy commissioned two external audits.

The report said: “The local authority has been instrumental in providing the necessary expertise and guidance to support the school.

“In light of the complaints, it has checked that leaders and governors are safeguarding pupils effectively.

“Reports show the school safeguards pupils effectively and has taken the necessary action against issues highlighted by the complaints.”

Some of the schools priorities for improvement are to update safeguarding practices in line with new procedures, provide further guidance for parents about the complaints procedure and monitor provision for pupils who have special educational needs or disabilities.

Emma Baker, head of academy, said: “As head of academy, the safeguarding of all children at Maltings is my number one priority and it is great that Ofsted recognised this in the report.

“That being said, we continually look to develop and improve everything we do to make our best better.

“Students, parents, carers and staff work hard to make Maltings a success and I look forward to that partnership continuing in the future.”
