Vandals have damaged the features of a children's Christmas trail around Braintree, just weeks after the event launched.

In conjunction with businesses around the town, Braintree Council has been asking youngsters to find the hidden animals as part of its Reindeer Trail.

To take part, children must help Father Christmas find 26 lost reindeer scattered across the town centre, for a chance to be entered into a prize draw.

Despite the positive reaction to the trail, residents have begun to notice that some of the props have been vandalised or damaged by members of the public.

One reindeer, at Fairfield Road's junction with South Street, has been bent out of shape possibly due to someone climbing on it.

Tom Cunningham, councillor responsible for economic development, said: “I am extremely disappointed and frustrated that the reindeers situated around Braintree town have been deliberately vandalised on a number of occasions.

"The reindeers are there for everyone to enjoy as part of our reindeer trail and to bring some festive cheer to the town in the lead up to Christmas.

"Officers are doing their up most to repair those that have been damaged.”

Up until November 30, children who complete the trail will be entered into a draw to win a festive hamper and could win the chance to turn on Braintree's Christmas lights on December 2.

Trail maps can be picked up free of charge at Braintree Town Hall.
