A man who overcame bullies and learned to wear his specs with pride has won a competition naming him glasses wearer of the year.

Alex Miller, 27, of Silver End, has picked up the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year prize.

He received the accolade at a star-studded event hosted by Rylan Clark in London last week.

Alex was chosen by a panel of expert judges and was handed the award by former Girl’s Aloud singer Nadine Coyle.

He wins a £10,000 cash prize and £1,000 glasses wardrobe for winning the award.

Alex, who entered via a competition on Facebook, has a piece of his optic-nerve missing in my left eye and began wearing glasses at primary school.

He said: "I entered the competition when I saw it on Facebook. It was a great surprise to find out I was the Facebook favourite voted by the public.

“To go through and win Spectacle Wearer of the Year was amazing and very overwhelming.

“I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in primary school and kids were always calling me things like four-eyes.

“Embrace wearing your glasses as much as you can. These days they’re quite fashionable, so they can be both functional and an accessory. So, don’t worry about it, just crack on.”
