A TEENAGER has been handed a seven-year prison sentence after he assaulted a man with a candle holder following a burglary.

The 17-year-old boy hit a man believed to be in his 30’s five times in the head during a botched burglary at a property in Christina Road, Witham, on Sunday May 7.

The victim had attempted to prevent the boy from fleeing the scene once he had discovered him inside the property.

Despite being left with deep cuts to his head, the victim was able to escape the scene and call for help.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested several days later and charged with burglary and GBH after the victim had picked him out in an identity parade.

He admitted to burglary but denied the charge of GBH with intent.

However, the boy was convicted of GBH with intent during a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court back in September and was then sentenced to seven years in prison at the same court on Thursday.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Greg Najdan said: “This 17 year-old boy not only invaded the victim’s personal space but then assaulted him with a weapon, leaving him with potentially serious injuries.

“Using such a level of violence on a whim is really concerning and I’m glad we’ve been able to bring him to justice.

“I hope he uses his time in detention to consider the consequences of his actions.

“I want to praise the courage of the victim throughout the investigation and court process.

“I hope this sentence provides him with some solace.”
