A GROUP helping the elderly socialise could fold before its 50th anniversary if it cannot find a new chairman.

The Dunmow Flitch Friendship Club is a group for over 55s and boasts more than 100 members.

Elderly residents are concerned the group could come to an end as the chairman is due to step down, and a replacement has not yet been found.

Current chairman, Peter Toms, said: "It is a very friendly club where we all help each other, so a chairman would find it a very enjoyable club to run.

"We provide an opportunity for the over 55s in and around Dunmow to meet friends, listen and dance to some light musical entertainment, have tea and biscuits and enjoy bingo or other games."

The group meets every second Tuesday of the month at Foakes Hall at 6pm.

Each evening finishes with a raffle at 9pm.

Mr Toms said: "The high numbers in attendance each month proves how beneficial the members find the group.

"Many do not have the opportunity to socialise and maintain important friendships.

"Some members are over 90 years old and some are disabled."

Transport is provided to the hall and membership is £15 per year.

The group is celebrating its 50th anniversary in July and would like to see more members and for someone to take up the chairman role.
