WITHAM Town Council is supporting schoolchildren who have been campaigning for a crossing.

Teachers and pupils from Templars Academy had a meeting with Witham councillors on Monday.

They have been asking for a crossing as their crossing patrol vacancy could not be filled.

Patrick Horner, Town Mayor, said the council was very impressed with their research.

He said: "The schoolchildren did really well, they said they would not be able to walk to the zebra crossing by the Cherry Tree pub as it's too far.

"They also said how they are not the only school who wishes to use a crossing in Cressing Road.

"Councillors suggested they did some research on the frequency of traffic before speaking to the county council.

"There's a feeling around that the county council won't do anything until there's an accident but this is pretty wholehearted and councillors were really impressed."

Children in Year 5 had written desperate letters to the town council, and Witham MP Priti Patel has shown her support.

The school will now tackle addressing Essex County Council to get a type of crossing.
