POOR signage could be contributing to the number of accidents at a 'black spot' junction, a resident has said.

On Sunday lanes on the A120 near Braintree were closed after a lorry overturned at the Galleys Corner roundabout.

The HGV caused severe delays as recovery work took place to take it off the road.

Vince Horsman who lives within 200 metres of the accident blackspot, said the lorry could have overturned due to "wrong signage".

Mr Horsman said: "Cars and lorries suddenly realise they are in the wrong lane and they will swerve right across it.

"There's a lot of accidents there and it could have been the case for that lorry.

"It shows 'straight on' for Chelmsford when in fact it turns at a right angle, and really Highways England needs to change that."

He said he regularly hears sirens as emergency services attend accidents.

He added: "Generally in Braintree road signs on the A120 are notoriously bad.

"If people aren't local they find themselves confused and lost.

"I believe it's one of the worst junctions in Essex- it's a blackspot and I'm wondering if the signage is a contributory factor.

"If it carries on there's a possibility of someone being killed."

Highways England said they could confirm that it is clearly indicated on signage and on the road markings that drivers can use both lanes on the approach to and on the roundabout if they wish to continue on to the A120.

They also said there is an advance map diagram sign well before the roundabout that indicates that to travel to Chelmsford you have to stay on the A120.
