A TOWN council has been hailed the best in Essex for its commitment to residents.

Witham Town Council has won the Council of the Year award at an annual ceremony of the Essex Association of Local Councils.

Town Mayor Patrick Horner attended the service on behalf of the council last Thursday.

He was given a certificate, £200 worth of vouchers and a silver salver plate.

He said: "They said Witham offered excellent services to the community and we have been busy and active in the Local Plan consultation process- we are achieving our vision."

The town council has played a large role in tackling issues such as healthcare services and parking.

It was also recognised for community events such as the annual drumhead service.

The council was up against 273 other parish and town councils across the county.

Mr Horner said: "Things like the community events are considered quite a success, it's events like these which are innovative.

"We are conscientious and relate well to the public."

Witham MP Priti Patel congratulated councillors as she is working closely with them to improve services.

The Town Clerk, Mark Squire, said: "This is a great achievement which reflects so well on the diversity of work that the town is engaged in, and on Witham councillors and staff alike – I am very proud."

The event was held in Feakes Hall in Great Dunmow.

A statement from the Essex Association of Local Councils said: "During the last year (the council) has been active in helping to shape the development of the town in the best interests of local residents, whilst recognising Governments’ house building targets.

"The community has been involved in seminars and meetings working towards achieving a vision for Witham for the next ten years.

"Witham also runs many events and delivers a large number of services, including the World War One Commemorations, which is a four year programme of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War."
