A ROCK musical like no other is coming to Braintree Arts Theatre and is sure to wow the audience.

Last Man On Earth is the brainchild of pianist and singer songwriter Benjamin Bloom, 34 and originally from Ipswich.

The songs play the background to an epic tale of gender war, in a world where men have gone power mad and women must fight back against them.

For Ben, as he prefers to be called, it has been something of a labour of love.

He said: “Me and my band were going around the gig circuit and people used to say they liked what we do and it was very theatrical.

“I sent a speculative email to the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich and they rang me and said you can have the theatre on this date - it was a bit of a shock.

“Then I had to task of coming up with the songs.”

Benjamin also brought in burlesque performers, circus acts and mind blowing dancers as well as encompassing genres from choral music to jazz.

Ben said: “The first shows sold out and it was a great success.

“We started by adding small bits of narrative to the performances and then we built a whole story around the show and we still continue to develop the show to fit the story.”

Since it started the musical has got bigger and better and now features some of the most talented niche performers in the country, even including video screen narration from Hugo Myatt of cult TV show Knightmare and the show has been performed at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

And for Ben, who plays the role of PR, booker and performer the hard work has all been worth it.

He said: “It is very stressful because it is all my work.

“I write the songs, I decide what goes on in the scenes and everything that happens in the show - it all feels like mine.

“It wasn't what I originally planned but in life you end up going down the path that you are supposed to be going down.”

Tickets for the show on October 8 cost £16 and can be bought at: www.braintreeartstheatre.com.
