NEW neighbourhood watch groups are being set up weekly to tackle a spate of burglaries.

Chair of the Essex Neighbourhood Watch, Clive Stewart, said he is talking to at least five new groups on a weekly basis about what they can do to keep their homes safe.

Mr Stewart said: "I have been visiting residents in Witham and have had thousands of door stickers and membership books to give out.

"It's very sad there are so many burglaries, I know people do what they can to protect their property and it's heartbreaking.

"I have been telling people what it means to get involved and advising them, especially the more vulnerable.

"Recently Essex Police has been asking us to help even more, distributing information in the company of police officers."

Susan Ager, 70, from Chelmer Road, said she felt patronised by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex's advice.

Roger Hirst recently spoke out about residents being vigilant and urged them to secure their property.

Mrs Ager said: "I wrote to Witham MP Priti Patel suggesting a public meeting should be held between residents and police following the number of burglaries.

"I can't remember the last time I saw police in the area or even a patrol car going around the streets.

"I live in an elderly neighbourhood and people can't afford to install security systems, it's worrying for them."

Ms Patel has called on police to take robust action.

She said: "The number of burglaries being reported is a cause of concern for local residents. I am in contact with Essex Police urging them to ensure all crimes are thoroughly investigated and leads followed up.

"Our streets need to be kept safe and whoever is responsible for these offences need to be apprehended and face the full force of the law.”

Braintree District NW Group meets every three months and communicates by emails and a weekly newsletter.
