THE FAMILY of a man killed in a fatal car crash are closer to achieving the dream he always had.

Coz Powell, 21, died in hospital following a crash on Braintree Road in Gosfield in 2014.

David Bradley, from Braintree, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when his car veered across the carriageway, hitting the car Coz and his friend James Simmons, 18, were in.

The three men died after the crash.

The former Hedingham School pupil had a dream to set up a venue to host charity events- a legacy which his parents, Gen and Antony, promised to carry on.

Halstead Gazette:

A year after setting up a fundraising page, the family has £33,000, which includes Coz's life insurance.

Mrs Powell said: "We have just had our first meeting about becoming a registered charity to hold events, and we are looking to hold a launch party in September.

"We are going to sell the house and move somewhere that has land which would be appropriate, we want it to be fairly local to benefit the people who supported us.

"We would also be interested in any land people are willing to provide which we can put in the charity's name."

The fundraising has been a success, but the family said the loss they have felt from the beginning will never go away.

Mrs Powell said: "I started bereavement counselling last week which is helping, but we are still very much stuck and I would like things to move a bit faster.

"We have had lots of support from friends and family, they have been phenomenal, but it's still huge in the families minds."

Last week they filmed a video interview for the police's drink and drug driving campaign, speaking about their experience.

Mrs Powell said: "It's not just the people who are killed and their families who are affected, it's the ambulance service who were also traumatised. The ripples just go on and on.

"There's a gaping hole and it affects relationships in the whole family- there's a fracture and we still find it really hard."
