A tree has been planted to complete a memorial area for the former Witham Labour leader, Bob Evans.

The councillor for Witham North died last summer after suffering a stroke -he was 82.

Yesterday about 30 people visited the memorial bench that was installed off Forest Road, close to where Dr Evans lived.

His wife Leni planted the tree, and councillors, friends and neighbours paid their respects.

Phil Barlow, Witham town councillor who worked with Dr Evans, said: “He was an enthusiastic and committed councillor and everyone appreciated the work he did on their behalf.

“To commemorate his 20 years of service we wanted to put the tree and bench near one of his first successes, which was getting signs to warn people of ducks crossing the road from the pond.

“We are hoping to make plans to make the old pond look more attractive with plants too, but it’s nice to see the vision completed.”
