A MAP has been released showing where 400 miles of roadworks are being removed from motorways and major roads across the country this weekend, to help bank holiday trips go smoothly.

Highways England says it always removes as many roadworks as possible at busy times, and will complete or lift 177 sets of roadworks for the late August getaway.

Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of customer operations at Highways England, explained: “To help road users enjoy this bank holiday weekend, we’re completing or suspending over 400 miles of roadworks on motorways and major trunk roads. But we’re still asking people to play their part by planning their journeys and making use of the traffic information services we provide.”

Roadworks will be removed wherever possible by 6am on Friday 28 August – leaving 97.4 per cent of Highways England’s 9,534 mile network roadwork-free.

In all, 432 miles of roadworks will be removed. Highways England is completing 115 schemes and suspending a further 62 sets of roadworks.

For the safety of drivers and their passengers, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain at 52 locations.

REMAINING

A47 / A1042 (near Norwich - Norfolk County Council work)

Major junction improvement

24hr Lane 2 chicaned lane 1 closure in the eastbound direction to permit safe construction of junction improvement on the approaches and within the A1042 Postwick Interchange - 3miles of roadworks - Nil to slight

Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: Construction ongoing either side of bank holiday weekend. Traffic management remains for safety reasons due to construction adjacent to lane 1 of A47.

M1 between J11 and J12 (near Luton)

Phase 2 works with construction of central pier for new J11a structure being currently constructed

Temporary road restraint in place between J11 and J12 with a 50mph speed limit in place to protect road users and the workforce (the speed limit is normally NSL).  The dynamic hard shoulder is closed. - 2miles of roadworks - Moderate

Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: There are narrow lanes in place, keeping the same number of lanes running (except dynamic hard shoulder), overnight closures are not required through the bank holiday, but it would not be safe or practical to remove the varioguard, narrow lanes or speed limit.
