Around 1,140 new homes must be built in Braintree every year to meet demand in the district, a shock new report claims.

The figure, far higher than the 883 homes a year being sought by Braintree Council, comes from a planning consultant hired by a developer behind several proposed Braintree developments.

To meet the target, the council would have to find land equivalent to the size of nearly 800 football pitches.

The report has been submitted to the authority, which is drawing up its local plan, alongside nearly 30 plots of land which have been added to a list of potential development sites in the district.

In total there are now 360 potential sites ranging in size from 10,000 home settlements to individual plots.
