Charity volunteers turned into fugitives as they fled from prison penniless and toured London in 15 hours.

A four-strong team from Braintree Youth Project Charity raised about £170 for the youth centre, known as the Hut, and the Essex Girls and Boys Club by taking part in the great escape from Chelmsford Prison last Saturday.

Youth centre manager Jo Fish with volunteers Gayle Wilson, Kate Manning and Kirsty Huxter headed for London, with their tickets sponsored by ICT firm DK Huxter Limited, to search for Shaun the Sheep statues dotted around the capital.

Unable to spend any of their own money, the team walked 12km, talked their way onto HMS Belfast and brought their own packed lunches.

Mrs Huxter said: “We had a fantastic time. Jo is an army cadet instructor so we managed to get on the HMS Belfast for free, which was brilliant."
