Braintree Council spent nearly £80,000 on experts and lawyers during Sainsbury’s unsuccessful bid to build a new superstore in the town.
The retail giant submitted plans for a new store at the Broomhills Industrial Estate in 2011 but they were rejected by the council in November 2013.
Sainsbury’s appealed the decision, leading to a public inquiry in December.
The cost of the long-running dispute can now be revealed after figures were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
