Campaigners fighting for the A120 to be upgraded can bid for a slice of up to £900million in public funds, it has been revealed.

Patrick McLoughlin, the Secretary of State for Transport, met with local business and political leaders on Monday in Colchester to discuss the plans for the A120, including the dualling of the road between Braintree and Marks Tey.

The Haven Gateway Partnership is leading a project to upgrade the notorious route between Braintree and Harwich, which could bring billions of pounds in growth and jobs to Braintree and the surrounding area.

Mr McLoughlin told the group partners, which includes Braintree District Council and Essex County Council, that the partnership could bid for some of the £900million allocated in the Roads Investment Strategy for smaller schemes.

This would allow Haven Gateway to gain match funding for the £5million offered by Essex County Council for short term safety works and a study to establish the preferred route of the dualling of the A120 between Braintree and Marks Tey.
