A museum turned back the clock to 1914 to commemorate the First World War.

Staff at Braintree District Museum dressed up in the style of the day and welcomed more than a hundred guests to their commemoration event on Saturday.

Visitors sat in the cockpit of a replica M1.C Bristol fighter plane and joined in with Braintree Musical Society’s war-time classics in the museum forecourt.

Guests used their ration coupons to buy trench cake, an egg-free fruit cake sent to the front line, which the museum cafe made with the original 1916 recipe.

Youngsters also made their own ceramic poppies and model zeppelins at the craft workshop to keep as souvenirs.

For the history buffs, Braintree Cadets gave interactive talks on First World War weaponry and gas warfare throughout the day, while Braintree and Bocking Civic society led a guided walk of Braintree.

Organiser Jenny Brown said: “We have been really busy and it was so nice to see people stop by and listen to the war-time songs.

“There’s been a really good vibe.

“The centenary has encouraged more people to be aware of these kinds of events and we have had some really positive feedback on the exhibition - days like this stay with people and help them to remember, which can only be a good thing.”
