A community project to inspire people’s pride in their estate is still brimming with ideas after seven years of good work.

Ten volunteers with the Humber Road Estate Community Initiative in Witham have installed bus shelters, had road lines painted and planted trees to improve the lives of residents since 2007.

Most recently, the pressure group have cleared a ditch which was flooded in the recent storms and will also maintain a flower bed to brighten up the estate entrance.

Chairman Kenneth Davies, 66, is the last of the original group members and has high hopes for future projects, including a bid for new children’s play area.

Mr Davies and his family have lived in Ouse Chase since 1979.

He said: “The best thing about the group is that the estate is a happier, more cohesive place to live.

“I’m most excited about putting our bid in to Mi Community for children’s play equipment like swings and roundabouts for primary age children, which is just in the planning stages.

“I might only volunteer one or two hours a week sometimes but it gives me a strong sense of purpose.”

The Humber Road Estate Community Initiative will meet at Spring Lodge meeting room three on October 24 at 7pm.
