Compromise over Colchester's lapdance club hours

A COMPROMISE could be reached over plans to extend the opening hours of Colchester’s only lapdance club.

Residents and councillors have opposed an application by the owners of Heaven Gentleman’s Club, in St Botolph’s Street, to stay open until 4am. Topless dancers perform at the club, which opened in 2009, five nights a week until 2am.

Councillors Bill Frame and Henry Spyvee said while they had no complaints from neighbours about the club, it would exacerbate problems with late-night rowdiness in the area.

Owner Jason Newell has agreed to revise his application so Heaven would stay open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The two Lib Dems have agreed to withdraw their opposition to the bid, which will be ruled on by a licensing committee at Colchester Town Hall on Friday.

Mr Spyvee said: “It’s not unreasonable in the circumstances and I don’t think it will add much to the problems that we already have in the town.”

There's nothing Gentlemanly about these sorts of clubs. And why the need to extend the hours? You can bet your bottom dollar at kicking out time there'd be drunken trouble. Will they pay a police subsidy for this? What ever next.

Wether you agree with this club or not on moral grounds there has never been any drunken trouble. The police are happy because there isn't trouble at this well managed club.

Is it such a crime for blokes to enjoy themselves at the weekend if they are not hurting anyone

Well you wouldn't want it to be your daughter dancing now would you?!

No, but it is all a bit unsavoury, desperate and degrading. I guess if everyone's happy doing it and watching it, then carry on but it's not something I would be interested in

I wonder if the two Lib Dems that have agreed to withdraw their opposition have visited the establishment recently ;)

People seemed scarcely aware of the existence of this place until a few weeks ago, so I guess whoever does go in there is not leaving and causing problems.

I´m sure nobody would want their daughter working there, but the world´s not a perfect place and people do what they can to get by. Probably better to have what is, it seems, a well managed place, than drive it all underground. Girls get better protection that way (I hope so, anyway).

taffy, have you ever seen\heard the nnoise womme make when ey come out of a hen nigt do? they're 10 times noisier than the people coming out of Heaven!& from what I've hard, it's £20 to ge in & £20 per dance, so that tends to cut the cavy element out staight away & Ivpicked loads of people up fom there & they've gone in with mates on sa nights or birthdays for a laugh or a bit of harmless fun. I don't think I've ever seen trouble outside there, unlike High Street !

Maybe not yet Taximano1, but the extended hours will see the strays from High Street pop by and top up their alcohol levels for the journey home.

Rubbish.
They can drink late in plenty of places with much more relaxed door policies.

Live and let live. By all accounts this is a well run place, used by well behaved and discreet people. I would never go to a place like myself as the wife wouldn't let me, but I have no issues with what I understand goes on there. Each to their own and I am sure the girls are of age and willing performers. Like it or not, where there is a demand there will be a supply. Those that oppose the morality of this should instead address their attentions to public drunkenness that is a blight on our town.
