'Green' multi-storey car park plans for university

ESSEX University has revealed plans to build a multi-storey car park at its Wivenhoe campus.

The four-storey car park will include a ‘green wall’ of shrubbery down one side.

It would be an extension to an existing ground level car park between its sports centre and Boundary Road and would provide an extra 359 spaces.

The car park already has 420 spaces.

The green wall will be kept watered via recycled, stored, rainwater from the car park’s roof.

A decision is expected to made by Colchester Council on April 24.

There is nothing at all green about a car park. They should be encouraging people to come by bus or bicycle.

If the busses in this town could be relied on I would tend to agree with you. Sadly, unless you live in or directly around the town centre, the bus services in Colchester are crap...it's an unfortunate side effect of a borough which is two-thirds rural. People won't give up the cars until public transport is improved.

What's another tower? We have about 6 already, and this one is going to have flowers on it.
If your against it - I really don't understand why...?

Yes because encouraging people from 40+ miles away to cycle/bus ride into the university is a really good idea, not!

This is such an uneducated naive view to have. It isn't just a matter of students who live in the Colchester area who drive to the university, many students from much further afield have no other form of transport to allow them to get to the university. Travelling by car is the only option for many! You need to take into account all the students who commute in from other towns OUTSIDE of Colchester, where there are no public transport links.

The car park is clearly inadequate and quite frankly gives the university a bad reputation! That place is absolute chaos due to the lack of spaces which do not accommodate for all the students. It cannot currently provide for those who live off campus- something which we see a rise in every year.

If the uni cannot provide then they are likely to be a big turn off for many high standard students. Students are paying thousands of pounds for their courses yet being unable to attend all lectures/classes due to lack of space to park their car.

**In terms of pollution--
driving up and down the current inadequate car park for 40 minutes looking for a space is hardly doing the environment any good...!!!! So yes, there IS something green and economical about extending/building a car park**

If the option was there to use a bus or bicycle, I am SURE many of the students/staff would take it...just to avoid the 40 minute wait for a space, having to park in puddles, being blocked in, being ticketed for parking on the councils grass etc etc.

The car park is a huge factor for students living off campus...I guarantee the uni would be loosing out on top quality students if they don't manage to have this proposal agreed.
