COLCHESTER’S Firstsite gallery will be closed on Mondays from now on so repairs and maintenance work can be carried out.
Commercial Director Wayne Warner said the decision also brought the gallery in line with the opening times of others.
Visitors to the attraction this week were surprised to find the main gallery space shut.
However the box office, shop and cafe were still open and will remain so under the new arrangements.
Mr Warner said: ““On Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, galleries open from 10am until 5pm, and on Thursdays and Fridays, galleries will stay open until 7pm so that full time workers can enjoy the exhibition outside office hours.
“While the main gallery spaces will no longer open on a Monday, visitors to Firstsite on this day will still be able to book for talks, workshops and other events at Firstsite’s box office, browse the shop for design-led gifts, see the concurrent ESCALA exhibition in Firstsite’s University Space, relax by the Berryfield Roman mosaic, and enjoy drinks, snacks and light meals in Firstsite’s café, MUSA. All parts of the building remain available for commercial hire, seven days a week.”
