Student dancer Kerry picked to perform at Olympics opening ceremony

A DANCER who missed out on tickets for the London Olympics opening ceremony will be performing at it instead.

Kerry Tokley, 20, spotted the auditions online at the same time she unsuccessfully applied to get tickets for herself and her parents.

Kerry, of Edward Marke Drive, Langenhoe, who is studying musical theatre at Essex University, has been chosen to join a dance team.

She said: “I am a mixture of nerves and excitement. I don’t know exactly what it will involve, as they are quite secretive about it. It was a free audition so I thought I’d just go for it.

“When I got a call back a second time I had an inkling they might want me, but you never know for sure.”

Kerry took part in two auditions at a London studio.

Rehearsals for the show start in May. The ceremony will kick off the London Olympics on July 27.

Thousands of actors, dancers and volunteers have signed up to take part.

Kerry’s parents will have to watch her on the television after failing to get a ticket for the event.

Kerry said: “It is unlikely the cameras will pick me out of the thousands of performers, but it is just great to be part of the spectacle.

“I don’t know what I will be wearing, but we have been measured up for costumes already.

“I have been researching past ceremonies and some of the outfits are quite interesting to say the least.”

Kerry began dancing 11 years ago with the Stagecoach theatre arts school and has been a member of the LR Dance school, in Colchester, since she was 12.

She went on to learn ballet, jazz and tap skills. Her ambition is to become a choreographer.

Kerry’s Olympic experiences will not end on the opening night. She also managed to get tickets to see the synchronised swimming events.
