New cycle routes launched in Colchester

NEW cycle routes have been created in Colchester as part of work to improve bike links in the town.

The work, in Greenstead, has been carried out as part of the Cycle Colchester Project.

These include Greenstead Community Centre and shopping areas, Hythe Station, Colchester town centre and St Andrew’s, Hazelmere and Sir Charles Lucas schools.

A new leisure route to Salary Brook has also been created.

In the past year I have not seen one cyclist using the lanes, plenty of them on the pavement even when there is a lane.
This dosnt surprise me as the lanes are in even in a poorer state of repair than the roadway and in most places littered with glass and other obstacles likely to puncture tyres

Cycle routes are a blatant waste of time , money and resource.

Any aliens hovering above in their spacecraft will think us a very backward species, as we have to be shown where to walk and where to ride our bikes.

Our council are very good at wasteing our money on things we simply do not need.

And while I'm on the subject, what is that strange signage / art thing by the side of the pond at Middlemill?

Is this town run by idiots?

Cycle lanes work if they are looked after. Glass all over them, of course, will make people use the roads instead. Most of those in Colchester are pretty well kept, as it happens, with a few exceptions. I'm a motorist, cyclist and pedestrian at different times: cycle paths work if they follow a "logical" route - in other words, not running for 400m, then suddenly stopping. They keep cyclists off the road - good for the traffic, and safer for them. The problem is the few who do just cycle through red lights, down pathways etc, but let's not write off the whole idea because of a few idiots - we don't stop cars driving because some people crash them.

Look at Holland, Sweden, Denmark - there, cyclists have a proper network of cycle paths, and their needs are equal to motorists - if you have that here, more people will cycle.

I use these lanes daily, having to avoid pedestrians walking in the cycle lanes. Where there are no cycle lanes I use the roads where drivers make a game of passing as close to you as possible. Three weeks ago I was knocked off my bike by a young driver, so more cycle paths, PLEASE
