Community soccer at St Anne’s, Colchester

FOOTBALL-CRAZY youngsters turned a new community soccer competition into a soaraway success.

More than 150 budding Rooneys and Drogbas turned out for the knockout tournament for children in Colchester’s St Anne’s ward.

Mike Hogg, the borough councillor who spearheaded the six-a-side competition, said it had been a huge hit.

He said: “The idea was to give youngsters something to do on a cold winter’s day. It was meant to start at 11am, but the kids were here already waiting at 10.20am.”

The competition, for the St Anne’s Cup, was held on the games area behind the community centre, off Harwich Road.

It was backed by a £250 community association grant, with Waitrose supplying food and hot soup.

There are already plans for a similar tournament in the summer.

Mr Hogg added: “It’s been a spectatcular success.

“If we’d put in all this time and effort and no one had turned up we’d have been bitterly disappointed, but they were queuing up to start.

“It’s been a brilliant day.”

Well done Mike Hogg and your many supporters for showing initiative in engaging so many youngsters to paticipate in the soccer competition. I'm sure that the youngsters will now feel a sense of purpose and that they belong to a caring community. Lets hope that their enthusiasm continues into their teens and they will continue with the good work you have started.
