THEY have a room with the best view in Colchester.

Peregrine falcons are nesting again at the top of the Jumbo water tower.

And now a conservation group leader has set up a series of watch point events to allow the public to get a glimpse at them.

The next one will be on Saturday from Colchester Sixth Form College, in North Hill, which English and media teacher Michael Padmore says will provide the best views of what he believes are at least two young and their parents.

Experts including Peter Merchant, who is skilled at rehabilitating birds of prey, photographer Sean Nixon and Zoe Smith, of the Hawk and Owl Trust, will be on hand to speak with students and the public.

For wildlife lover Michael, it is uplifting to see these nearly extinct birds thriving.

Photographer Sean Nixon managed to snap these elusive birds

He said: “When there’s so many gloomy stories about the state of the natural world we take some solace in the fact they seem to be doing well.

“They are the fastest hunters in the world so to see them as I did last year when there were six of them flying above my head chasing a sparrowhawk was astonishing.

“Sometimes this sort of thing doesn’t find a place in education and it should do, but the college has been really supportive of the conservation group and this initiative.”

However, sometimes the birds do not read the script and they have proved elusive during previous watch point events.

However, by the next events on June 16 and 30, the young will be on the verge of flying.

Michael said: “These two adults showed they were brilliant parents in 2017 when they managed to raise four young birds, in spite of a couple of bumps along the way.

“Last year at least two of the birds tumbled out of the nest and one of the other ones flew into the wall of the sixth form and landed in a flower bed.

"It managed to find its way to the shed roof in the garden and spent a day there recovering before fortunately, it flew off.”

Students will meet people at the college gates from 10am until 1pm. Telescopes will already be set up but you are welcome to bring your own.
