AN airfield museum is celebrating an expansion which will allow them to display bigger aircrafts.

A new building is the latest addition at Boxted Airfield Museum in Langham.

The building was funded by an individual's generous donation, and took three months to build.

Boxted Airfield Historical Group are grateful to the Gooding family for allowing them to lease the additional land.

Richard Turner, from the museum, said: "This expansion doubles the amount of exhibition space and will allow us to display the large section of B26 marauder aircraft fuselage currently kept in a shipping container.

"This is the only example of this type of aircraft in the UK.

"There will be sufficient space to exhibit other large items currently in storage.

"The new building will be used for the first time on May 27, during the events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the airfield.

"It opened at the end of May 1943."

The base was home to the 8th and 9th air forces of the USA with the 386th Bomb Group, 354th Fighter Group, 56th Fighter Group and an Air Sea Rescue squadron.

After the war the RAF had various squadrons at Boxted until 1947.

Richard added: "We will use the building like a theatre for our main event on the May 27.

"There will be presentations on the history of the airfield. The presenters come from the USA and Australia as well as the UK and include the families of men who served at the airfield during World War Two."

Admission to the event is £3 and children go free.

It will be open from 10am until 4pm.
