CAMPAIGNERS say a planned KFC would be more suited to downtown Las Vegas than a derelict site on the edge of Colchester.

Planners have recommended the controversial fast-food drive-thru, in Ipswich Road, is approved when it is discussed in front of councillors next week.

The bid was previously refused by a Government inspector, who cited an inappropriate effect on the neighbouring Lion and Lamb Cottage.

But under the fresh plans, the restaurant has been relocated as far away from the historic cottage as possible.

Despite the Tendring Council planners' recommendation, campaigners still hope the scheme will be refused.

Rodney Dass, who lives in the historic cottage with wife Stephanie, said: "In terms of how these plans relate to those which were previously refused, it probably is as good as it's going to get.

"If it has got to be there, this is the best case scenario for us.

"But from our point of view, we are still objecting to it on a number if grounds."

Mr Dass cited a proposed 8m high sign which will be an illuminated bucket - lit up between 6am and 11pm everyday - which will higher than his home.

He added: "It is a monstrosity. It would only be suitable in downtown Las Vegas."

The campaigner also cited a traffic survey carried out by KFC, which appears to show the development will have no impact on the flow of traffic in Ipswich Road.
