A REMINDER that we can all be revolutionary in our own small way is just one of the themes behind a three-day arts event taking place in Colchester.

Using the centenary of the Russian Revolution to celebrate the possibility of radical and revolutionary social change, A Revolutionary Reminder will include specially new commissioned art works, a film by Colchester artist Chris Dobrowolski and a travelling pop-up concert performed by film composer Jason Frederick.

The man behind the music for such films and television programmes as 101 Dalmatians 2, Disney's The Replacements and America's Got Talent, will be playing on a piano on the back of a lorry, at outdoor sites across the town including the entrance to Castle Park in the Dutch Quarter, Balkerne Gate by the Mercury, and Weston Homes Community Stadium. The mini-concerts will be around 20 minutes each and will feature music that tell the story of the Russian Revolution and signify the importance of music to revolutionary change.

That includes Dmitry Pokrass who was studying piano at the Petrograd Conservatory in 1917, while the people marched in the city streets, and his brother Samuel who wrote songs for the Red Army and later emigrated to the United States, where he composed for Hollywood.

As well as the travelling pop-up concerts, artists such as Adam Burton, Clare Marsh, Mark Titchner and Ruth Ewan have been commissioned to create a poster each to be distributed freely during the performances and Colchester's own revolutionary Chris Dobrowolski has create a film to be projected during the Jason's playing.

The weekend has been put together by Priscila Buschinelli, with the help of Kevin Nunn, from Colchester Trades Union Council, and fellow art curator, Kaavous Clayton.

Kevin says: "The revolutionaries used trains to take cinema and music across Russia and so A Revolutionary Reminder copies this technique using a piano and projector on a truck. Chris Dobrowolski’ s film for A Revolutionary Reminder is constructed from a careful observation of the Soviet parades, and our own political culture.

"These parades and Chris’s film suggest that real revolution is created from below not inspired by slogans and a celebration of military and government power."

With free soup provided by Emma Chesters of Good Souls Bakery, A Revolutionary Reminder runs from 10.15am today at Colchester Sixth Form College to 5pm on Sunday where the concerts finish at the Old Bus Depot in Queen Street.
