Fare dodgers have been fined almost £66,000 for using trains without a ticket.

Greater Anglia has prosecuted 370 passengers in the past six weeks for evading rail fares on its network.

The company took the passengers to court after inspectors found them on board with no ticket or with no way of paying.

Most of the offenders were found on the Southend Victoria line and a total of 302 people have appeared before Southend Magistrates's Court.

Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia customer services director, said: "By not paying for a ticket, we have less money to invest in making the railway better for everyone and it could lead to bigger increases in rail fares."
