POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a woman was found dead in a house in Colchester.

Detectives were this morning investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

The woman has been named locally as mum Cheryl Birdsall. 

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly after 7.45pm on Tuesday with reports the 37-year-old had been found dead at an address in Avignon Close, Colchester.

A 43-year-old man from Colchester was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody for questioning.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene.

A spokesman for The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) said: "We were called to an address in Avignon Close, Colchester at 7.31pm.

Gazette:

"We sent a rapid response vehicle, ambulance and ambulance officer to the scene.

"Sadly, a patient in their 30s was deceased."

A post mortem examination is yet to take place on Miss Birdsall. It is unclear when it is planned for.
