DARING mountain climbers have surpassed their fundraising target for Cancer Research UK in memory of their relative who died last September.

Robbie Lee overcame nausea and lethargy on Ben Nevis, the first of three climbs he endured as part of the Three Peaks challenge.

He was joined by his brother Graeme, 25, cousins Tom, 17, and Sam, 20, his uncle Keith Brazier, 43, plus family friend Ben Matthew, 39.

The effort was in memory of Robbie’s uncle Mick Brazier, who died last September, and saw them raise more than £3,000 for the cancer charity.

Although it was a gruelling exercise, they completed the peaks in 23 hours 18 minutes, even setting a group record of three hours and 10 minutes on Scafell Pike - their second mountain.

Robbie, of Colchester, said: “It was the hardest peak of them all so it was a proud moment. I told the group we were on track to beat the group record so we ran the last kilometre.

“There were just seven torches running towards the bottom of the mountain.

“Snowdon was just as hard, climbing at about 4.30am with minimal sleep but Graeme was at the back encouraging everyone.

“To get a better time he ran three miles, I don’t know how he did it.

“But halfway up Ben Nevis, I was completely reconsidering why I did it. No-one thought I would make it.”

Despite the pain, the Lee brothers said they might do it again to try to beat their time.

Robbie added: “I feel good about how much we raised and we know my uncle will be looking down on us proud.”
