DISADVANTAGED children from London will be treated to a special day out to the seaside by steam train as part of the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Walton railway station.

The Tornado steam locomotive, commissioned by Tendring Council chairman Mark Platt, will travel from London’s Liverpool Street to Walton’s station on Saturday, August 12.

The birthday event is being held to raise cash for St Helena Hospice.

Mr Platt said one of the six carriages has been reserved especially for the children, some of whom have never been on a train or visited the seaside before.

They will spend the day in Walton where they will be special guests of the pier, before returning home courtesy of Greater Anglia.

While they explore everything that Walton has to offer, the Tornado will run a shuttle service throughout the day.

Steam train enthusiasts have snapped up tickets for the trips between Walton and Colchester, and many more visitors are expected just to see the train in its glory.

Greater Anglia managing director Jamie Burles said: “We are pleased to be able to contribute to what should be a memory to last a lifetime for this group of children.

“Tornado will be a spectacle that people along the route from London to Walton will enjoy and a fitting way to celebrate the heritage of the region’s railway.”

Mr Platt said he was delighted to be able to share the celebrations with youngsters from across the capital.

“For the children to have the opportunity to travel on a steam train, experience the thrills of Walton Pier and be a part of Walton’s special day fills me with joy,” he added.

He added that the event is a great opportunity for local businesses and voluntary groups who are gearing up for a fun day of festivities all over the town.
