A NEW interpretation board to help residents and visitors learn about the history of Colchester's Roman Wall is aiming to bust a myth about a famous nursery rhyme.

The Friends of Colchester Roman Wall unveiled their latest plaque on Balkerne Hill alongside mayor Gerard Oxford, mayoress Beverley Oxford and Melinda Simpson from HainesWatts Chartered Accountants - who are sponsoring the installation.

The board tells the story of the damage to the wall during the Siege of Colchester in 1648 and explains, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty was based upon a Civil War cannon being positioned on the nearby St Mary at the Wall Church.

As well as the information, the board also has an illustration showing how part of the wall used to look with houses in front of it which were only demolished in the 1970s.

Another four boards are being planned for around the Roman Wall which will add up to 13 in total, and the group hope to have them all installed by the end of this year.
