A SPECIAL DZ flash has been designed and presented in recognition of the incredible role Colchester's military police have played in conflicts involving our Airborne forces.

The flashes, a badge worn on the shoulder, were introduced during the Second World War.

They are designed to identify paratroopers and help them rapidly form into units in drop zones.

The flashes are unique to a battalion or company and it is a huge honour for the military police - known as the Redcaps - to be given one.

The Redcaps of 156 Provost Company, 4th Regiment Royal Military Police were presented with a DZ flash by Lieutenant General James Bashall CBE, Assistant Colonel Commandant of the Adjutant General’s Corps.

Redcaps have deployed on operations with 16 Air Assault Brigade, Colchester's airborne rapid reaction force, for many years.

Among the roles include crime scene investigators, custody specialists and crucial support.

Second Battalion The Parachute Regiment have a blue DZ flash, for 3 Para it is green.

Now for the Redcaps it is a red diamond on a blue background.

Major Michael Boyd, Officer Commanding 156 Pro Coy, said: “It is a proud day for the company to be presented with the DZ flash, which represents the unique role and history we have in provide policing support to airborne forces.

"We are trained and ready to deploy in support of 16 Air Assault Brigade wherever that maybe in the world, while also providing 24/7 policing presence at Colchester Garrison in support of Essex Police.”

Sgt Luke Scarratt, a parachute trained Redcap, will be wearing the flash with pride.

He said: "On an operation, there would be RMP soldiers attached to the Paras and able to jump in alongside them to offer our specialist policing skills, such as gathering evidence and detention, to help them achieve the mission.

"Working alongside paratroopers puts pressure on us to keep our soldering skills sharp, but gives the opportunity for us to shine. It’s great to have the DZ flash as a recognition of our airborne role.”

The presentation took place at a special parade on Tuesday at Colchester's military corrective training centre.
