COLCHESTER Castle has made the final 12 in a list of the most popular castles in the country.

The Norman castle has made the top 12 in a competition by HolidayHolidayLettings.co.uk which is owned by TripAdvisor.

Other finalists include Windsor Castle and Edinburgh Castle, and a public vote will decide on the winner.

The description of Colchester Castle reads: "A visit to Colchester Castle is an interactive experience where history comes to life.

"Visit the museum to have a go at building a Norman archway, excavating a Roman doctor’s grave, or even steering a chariot.

"The large scale 'son et lumière' projection will wow you as it transforms the east wall with spectacular light and sound.

"If 'proper history' is what you’re looking for, book a tour of the castle roof (panoramic views await!) or take a tour down into the Roman vaults (with an expert guide, of course)."

Votes can be cast here before midnight on June 20, and the winning castle will be officially crowned The UK’s Most Popular Castle 2017 the following day.

Councillor Paul Smith, leader of Colchester Council, said: "We are delighted that our jewel attraction has been shortlisted in this competition, which recognises its importance as one of the country’s leading heritage attractions.

"Colchester Castle is testament to the importance we place on celebrating the best our unique past has to offer, and is a significant reason why people continue to visit the borough.

"I would urge everyone to vote for our wonderful historic gem, before the competition closes on June 20."
