SPORTING achievements were celebrated at a civic reception hosted by Colchester’s mayor.

The event at Colchester Town Hall focused on Essex County Cricket and the Olympics and Paralympics.

Mayor Julie Young entertained sporting stars from Colchester and across the county, along with invited dignitaries.

Essex County Cricket Club, which last year won Division Two and were promoted back to top flight county cricket, were part of the gathering including club chief executive Derek Bowden and coaching staff.

Members of Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club, were also present.

The event was also an opportunity to see the County Cricket Championship trophy and hear more on the sporting achievements from guest speakers.

Mrs Young congratulated the club on its promotion and also wished Colchester United players well as they come to the exciting end to their season.

Mrs Young said: “It is wonderful that there is so much sporting talent in Colchester and Essex. The accomplishments of these dedicated individuals and teams really puts the region on the map and inspires the sportsmen and women of the future to achieve great things.”

Her husband, cricket fan and councillor Tim Young, was“thrilled” to meet England cricketer Ravi Bopara.
