A HUSBAND was tasered after charging at police officers.

Ray Wright refused to put down a glass after being ordered to by officers and when he finally did so he then ran at them.

Wright, 43, admitted obstructing or restricting police officers in the execution of their duty when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.

The two offences took place on January 20 at his home in Keelers Way, Great Horkesley.

Stephen Sparkes, prosecuting, said: “Officers attended the address after a call about domestic matters.

“The complainant, his wife, was in the kitchen. Officers agreed to speak to the defendant and asked him to go upstairs.

“He was holding a pint glass he would not put down. He was intoxicated and making comments to his wife.

“One of the officers withdrew a taser. He looked like he was getting aggressive.

“He put the pint down and went towards them at a fast pace. He lunged at PC Hubbard and pushed PC Self.

“Officers had to fire the taser."

The domestic matters were not pursued, but the tirade of abuse against officers and his behaviour towards officers was.

Katie Armstrong, mitigating, said: “Although he was being a pain and resisting, it was not that sustained and only went on a few minutes. He had got the glass, but at no point was he going to use it as a weapon.

“It was full of water and he was going to bed.

“He was abusive to officers and he is extremely remorseful.”

District Judge Susan Holdham fined him £200 for each of the two offences as well as costs and charges totalling £515.

She said: “I accept the police officers may have been heavy handed but they have to deal with difficult situations. You had a glass in your hand. They did not know you were not going to use it.

“I don’t think you made things any better for yourself.”
